Swimming is excellent exercise, but it should be temporarily avoided after cataract surgery.
As a general postoperative precaution, patients should not swim for at least four weeks after cataract surgery. This includes swimming pools, the sea, lakes, rivers, hot tubs and water-based exercise classes.
Swimming should resume only after:
- At least four weeks have passed.
- The eye has healed normally.
- There is no significant redness or inflammation.
- Vision is clear and stable.
- The surgical incision is secure.
- Your ophthalmologist has confirmed that it is safe.
Some patients may need to wait longer than four weeks, particularly after complicated cataract surgery or surgery combined with a retinal, glaucoma or corneal procedure.
The main concern is not that swimming movements will dislodge the new intraocular lens. After uncomplicated cataract surgery, the lens implant is positioned securely inside the eye, and ordinary movement does not usually cause it to move.
The more immediate concerns are:
- Exposure of the healing eye to microorganisms in water
- Irritation from chlorine, salt and other contaminants
- Water leaking around swimming goggles
- Pressure from tight goggles
- Accidental rubbing of the eye
- Being struck by another swimmer
- Poor balance or depth perception during visual recovery
- Straining during vigorous swimming
- Lifting heavy swimming or diving equipment
The Quick Answer
When Can Most Patients Swim Again?
Patients should avoid swimming for a minimum of four weeks after cataract surgery.
After four weeks, gentle swimming may be resumed if:
- The operation was uncomplicated.
- The postoperative examinations have been satisfactory.
- The surgical wound is secure.
- The eye is comfortable.
- There is no increasing redness.
- There is no discharge.
- Vision is stable.

Why Should You Avoid Swimming for Four Weeks?
The Eye Has a Healing Surgical Incision
During cataract surgery, the surgeon creates one or more small openings in the cornea to remove the cataract and insert the intraocular lens.
These incisions are usually designed to seal without stitches. However, the eye still requires time for:
- The wound edges to become secure
- Inflammation to settle
- The corneal surface to recover
- Normal tear-film function to return
- The eye’s natural protective barriers to recover
An incision that appears closed is not necessarily fully healed at a microscopic level.
Avoiding swimming for four weeks gives the corneal wound and ocular surface more time to recover before exposure to recreational water.
Recreational Water Is Not Sterile
Swimming-pool water, seawater, lake water, river water and hot-tub water may contain microorganisms.
Even water that looks clean may contain:
- Bacteria
- Fungi
- Parasites
- Organic material
- Chemical irritants
- Contaminants from other swimmers
Swimming pools are treated with chlorine, but chlorinated water is not sterile.
Eye Infection After Cataract Surgery Can Be Serious
Endophthalmitis is a rare but serious infection involving the inside of the eye.
Symptoms may include:
- Increasing pain
- Increasing redness
- Worsening vision
- Light sensitivity
- Eyelid swelling
- Discharge
Although swimming is not the usual cause of postoperative endophthalmitis, avoiding recreational water while the eye is healing reduces unnecessary microbial exposure.
Chlorine Can Irritate the Ocular Surface
Chlorine helps control microorganisms but can irritate the eye.
The ocular surface may already be sensitive after surgery because of:
- The corneal incision
- Postoperative eye drops
- Tear-film instability
- Temporary dry-eye symptoms
- Exposure to antiseptic during surgery
- Reduced blinking
Pool water may therefore cause:
- Stinging
- Redness
- Watering
- Grittiness
- Dryness
- Temporary blurred vision
Seawater and Natural Water Contain Additional Contaminants
Seawater, lakes and rivers may contain:
- Bacteria

Natural water should not be assumed to be safe merely because it looks clear.
Swimming May Encourage Eye Rubbing
Water, chlorine, salt, sunscreen or fogging goggles may make the eyes feel irritated.
This may cause patients to rub or press the operated eye without thinking.
Eye rubbing can:
- Irritate the corneal incision
- Damage the ocular surface
- Introduce microorganisms
- Increase inflammation
- Cause pain
- Disturb a vulnerable corneal epithelium
Goggles Do Not Provide Complete Protection
Swimming goggles can reduce water exposure, but they do not create a perfect seal in every swimmer.
Goggles may:
- Leak
- Shift
- Trap contaminated water
- Press around the eye
- Be dislodged during turns
- Require forceful removal
- Cause the wearer to rub or adjust the eye
Goggles should be used only after you have been cleared to swim. They should not be used as a reason to swim before four weeks.
A Practical Swimming Timeline
The Day of Surgery
Do not swim on the day of cataract surgery.
Also avoid:
- Swimming pools
- Hot tubs
- Jacuzzis
- The sea
- Lakes
- Rivers
- Water parks
- Snorkelling
- Scuba diving
- Water aerobics
Your vision and balance may be affected by:
- Pupil-dilating drops
- Sedation
- An eye pad or shield
- Corneal swelling
- Light sensitivity
- A difference between the two eyes
Gentle walking around the home is usually sufficient activity.
During the First Week
Avoid all swimming and water immersion.
During this period:
- Keep recreational water out of the eye.
- Do not submerge your face.
- Avoid forceful shower spray.
- Do not soak in a bath with your face close to the water.
- Avoid water-based exercise.
- Continue prescribed eye drops.
- Attend your postoperative review.
You may usually shower carefully, but showering is different from swimming because the exposure can be controlled.
During the Second Week
Continue to avoid:
- Swimming pools
- Open water
- Hot tubs
- Water aerobics
- Snorkelling
- Diving
- Water sports
Even if vision feels clear, the eye is still healing.
Continue to protect the eye from:
- Direct water exposure
- Eye rubbing
- Contaminated water
- Accidental injury
During the Third Week
Do not resume swimming yet.
You may feel almost completely recovered, but the safest approach is to complete the full four-week restriction.
Continue with land-based activities such as:
- Walking
- Stationary cycling
- Light gym exercise
- Gentle stretching
- Moderate aerobic exercise when approved
Avoid using goggles as a substitute for adequate healing.
After Four Weeks
Gentle swimming may be resumed after four weeks if your ophthalmologist confirms that the eye has healed normally.
Begin with:
- A short session
- Easy swimming
- A clean, well-maintained pool
- Properly fitted goggles
- A quiet lane
- No diving
- No competitive starts
- No vigorous training
Stop if you experience:
- Eye pain
- Increasing redness
- Blurred vision
- Significant stinging
- Discharge
- Light sensitivity
- A feeling that something is in the eye
After Approximately Six Weeks
Following uncomplicated cataract surgery, many patients can gradually return to:
- Longer swimming sessions
- Vigorous lap training
- Open-water swimming
- Snorkelling
- Water aerobics
- Recreational water sports
Higher-risk activities should still be resumed progressively and only when approved.
Showering Is Not the Same as Swimming
Can You Shower After Cataract Surgery?
You can generally shower carefully after cataract surgery.
However, avoid directing water at the operated eye during the early recovery period.
Keep the eyelids gently closed and avoid:
- Forceful spray onto the face
- Shampoo entering the eye
- Soap entering the eye
- Rubbing the eyelids with a towel
- Repeatedly splashing the face
How Should You Wash Your Hair?
Tilt your head backwards so water flows away from your face.
You may find it easier to:
- Use a handheld showerhead.
- Ask someone to help.
- Wash your hair at a salon with your head tilted backwards.
- Keep a clean towel nearby to dab water from your forehead.
Do not lean forward under a strong shower stream.
How Should You Wash Your Face?
Use a clean, damp cloth.
- Keep the operated eye gently closed.
- Wipe away from the eye.
- Avoid pressure on the eyelid.
- Use a clean portion of the cloth for each pass.
- Pat the face dry rather than rubbing.
What if Water Accidentally Enters the Eye?
Do not panic.
A brief accidental splash does not mean that an infection will develop.
You should:
- Avoid rubbing the eye.
- Blink gently.
- Continue your drops as prescribed.
- Dry the surrounding skin with a clean tissue.
- Observe for worsening symptoms.
Contact your ophthalmologist if the exposure involved visibly contaminated water or is followed by:
- Increasing redness
- Pain
- Discharge
- Light sensitivity
- Worsening vision
- Significant swelling
Swimming Pools
Are Chlorinated Pools Safe After Four Weeks?
A properly maintained swimming pool is generally preferable to uncontrolled natural water when you first return to swimming.
However, chlorinated pool water may still contain:
- Irritating chemicals
- Organic material
- Microorganisms
- By-products formed when chlorine reacts with sweat and other contaminants
Pool water is not equivalent to sterile water.
Choose a Well-Maintained Pool
When swimming resumes, choose a pool that:
- Appears clean
- Is professionally maintained
- Has clear water
- Is not overcrowded
- Has appropriate water-quality monitoring
Avoid entering water that appears:
- Cloudy

Why Are Hot Tubs Treated More Cautiously?
Hot tubs and jacuzzis create a warm, shared-water environment.
Warm water may support microbial growth when water treatment is inadequate. Aeration also produces splashes and droplets near the face.
Hot tubs may expose the operated eye to:
- Warm communal water
- Aerosolised droplets
- Chemicals
- Organic contaminants
- Direct splashing
- Facial immersion
Wait Longer Before Using a Hot Tub
Although ordinary swimming may resume after four weeks when approved, hot tubs and jacuzzis may be better delayed until approximately six weeks.
Your ophthalmologist may advise an even longer restriction.
Keep Your Head Above Water
When you eventually return:
- Do not submerge your face.
- Avoid jets directed towards the face.
- Do not allow other users to splash you.
- Avoid touching the eyes.
- Leave if the water appears cloudy or poorly maintained.
Swimming in the Sea
Is Seawater Safe After Four Weeks?
Seawater is not sterile.
It may contain:
- Bacteria
- Parasites
- Algae
- Sand
- Pollution
- Organic material
- Sunscreen and other contaminants
Salt can also sting and irritate the ocular surface.
Open-Water Conditions Add Further Risks
Sea swimming may involve:
- Waves
- Strong currents
- Sand
- Wind
- Sun glare
- Loss of goggles
- Accidental impact
- Difficulty entering or leaving the water
- Greater physical exertion
For these reasons, open-water swimming may be resumed later than swimming in a controlled pool.
Avoid Swimming After Heavy Rain
Coastal water quality may worsen after heavy rainfall because of runoff and drainage contamination.
Do not swim when the water:
- Appears discoloured
- Smells abnormal
- Contains visible debris
- Has algae or foam
- Is subject to a public-health advisory
Protect the Eye From Sand
Sand can scratch or irritate the ocular surface.
At the beach:
- Wear sunglasses.
- Keep sandy hands away from the face.
- Avoid rubbing the eye.
- Do not allow children to throw sand near you.
- Wash your hands before using eye drops.
Lakes, Rivers and Reservoirs
Natural Fresh Water Is Not Sterile
Lakes, rivers and reservoirs may contain:
- Bacteria
- Parasites
- Soil
- Algae
- Organic material
- Pollution
- Agricultural runoff
It is prudent to resume natural-water swimming later than swimming in a well-maintained pool.
Consider Waiting Longer Than Four Weeks
Depending on your recovery, your ophthalmologist may recommend waiting approximately six weeks before swimming in:

- Be dislodged during turns or diving
They are an additional precaution after four weeks and after medical clearance—not a substitute for healing.
Avoid Extremely Tight Goggles
Goggles should form a seal without excessive pressure.

- Press directly on the eyelids
- Leave deep marks
- Require forceful pulling to remove
- Cause headache or visual disturbance
Remove Goggles Carefully
To remove goggles:
- Close your eyes.
- Gently release the seal at one side.
- Lift the goggles away without snapping the strap.
- Avoid rubbing your eyelids.
Keep Goggles Clean
After each swim:
- Rinse the goggles appropriately.
- Allow them to dry.
- Store them in a clean case.
- Avoid sharing goggles.
- Replace damaged or mouldy goggles.
Contact Lenses and Swimming
Do Not Swim in Contact Lenses
Contact lenses and water are a hazardous combination.
Water exposure may:
- Cause a contact lens to swell
- Make the lens adhere to the cornea
- Trap microorganisms against the eye
- Increase the risk of microbial keratitis
- Increase the risk of Acanthamoeba infection
This applies to:
- Swimming pools
- The sea
- Lakes
- Rivers
- Hot tubs
- Water parks
Do Not Put a Contact Lens in the Operated Eye Without Approval
A contact lens should not be inserted into the operated eye during recovery unless your ophthalmologist specifically approves it.
A contact lens may:
- Irritate the healing surface
- Interfere with medication
- Introduce microorganisms
- Mask symptoms
- Rub near the incision
Use Prescription Goggles
Patients who need visual correction while swimming should consider prescription swimming goggles.
These are preferable to wearing contact lenses in water.
What About a Contact Lens in the Unoperated Eye?
After first-eye cataract surgery, some patients use a contact lens in the unoperated eye to reduce the difference in prescription between the eyes.
Do not wear the contact lens while swimming, even when it is only in the unoperated eye.
Swimming After First-Eye Cataract Surgery
The Eyes May Have Different Prescriptions
After surgery on one eye, the operated and unoperated eyes may differ in:
- Clarity
- Prescription
- Image size
- Colour perception
- Contrast
- Focusing distance
This can cause:

- Poor depth perception

Seek advice if the eye is:

- Poked by a finger
- Hit by a diving mask
- Exposed to a high-pressure water jet
- Scratched by sand or debris

Can I Swim if I Keep My Head Above Water?
Water walking or aqua exercise still carries a risk of splashing, slipping and accidental immersion.
Avoid water-based activity until four weeks have passed and your ophthalmologist approves.
Can I Swim Earlier With Goggles?
No.
Goggles can leak and do not remove the risk of contamination or pressure around the eye.
Can I Swim Without Goggles?
Once the eye is fully healed, some patients may eventually swim without goggles.
Goggles are still recommended because they reduce:
- Chemical irritation
- Water exposure
- Debris contact
- Accidental rubbing
Can I Open My Eyes Underwater?
Do not deliberately open your eyes underwater during postoperative recovery.
Even after healing, opening the eyes underwater may cause irritation and microbial exposure.
Can I Go to the Beach Without Swimming?
You may usually visit the beach when you feel steady, but:
- Wear sunglasses.
- Keep sand away from the eye.
- Avoid rubbing.
- Do not allow waves to splash your face.
- Avoid lifting heavy equipment.
- Use your eye drops with clean hands.
Can I Sit in a Hot Tub Without Submerging My Face?
Splashes and aerosolised water may still reach the eye.
Wait until your ophthalmologist permits hot-tub use.
Can I Wear Contact Lenses Under Goggles?
No.
Do not swim in contact lenses, even when goggles are worn.
Can I Use Prescription Goggles?
Yes.
Prescription swimming goggles are preferable to swimming with contact lenses.
What if I Accidentally Fall Into a Pool?
Leave the water, avoid rubbing the eye and dry your face with a clean towel.
Contact your clinic if:
- Your face was submerged during the first four weeks.
- The water was visibly dirty.
- The eye becomes painful or red.
- Vision worsens.
- Discharge develops.
Can Swimming Move My Intraocular Lens?
Gentle swimming after adequate healing does not normally dislodge a properly positioned intraocular lens.
Lens movement is more strongly associated with:
- Significant eye trauma
- Weak zonules
- Complicated surgery
- Certain pre-existing eye conditions
Can I Swim After YAG Laser Capsulotomy?
YAG laser capsulotomy does not reopen the original cataract incision.
The recommended restriction may therefore be shorter, but follow the instructions provided after the laser procedure.
Can I Swim After Cataract and Retinal Surgery?
Do not follow a routine cataract-surgery timeline.
The retinal procedure may require:
- Longer activity restrictions
- Special positioning
- Avoidance of pressure changes
- Restrictions related to intraocular gas
Obtain clearance from your retinal surgeon.
A Return-to-Swimming Checklist
Before Returning to the Pool
Confirm that:
- At least four weeks have passed.
- Your ophthalmologist has allowed you to swim.
- The eye is healing normally.
- There is no increasing redness.
- There is no pain.
- There is no discharge.
- Vision is stable.
- You can judge steps and pool edges safely.
- Your goggles fit comfortably.
- You are not wearing contact lenses.
- The pool appears clean and well maintained.
During Your First Swim
- Begin with a short session.
- Swim gently.
- Avoid diving.
- Avoid competitive starts.
- Avoid crowded lanes.
- Do not rub the eye.
- Stop if the eye becomes painful or vision changes.
- Leave the water if the goggles leak repeatedly.
After Swimming
- Remove the goggles gently.
- Dry your face with a clean towel.
- Wash and dry your hands before using eye drops.
- Do not rinse the eye with tap water.
- Use prescribed lubricants if advised.
- Monitor for persistent redness, pain or blur.
The Bottom Line
Patients should avoid swimming for at least four weeks after cataract surgery.
This includes:
- Swimming pools
- The sea
- Lakes
- Rivers
- Hot tubs
- Water aerobics
- Snorkelling
- Water parks
- Water sports
After four weeks, swimming should resume only if:
- The eye has healed normally.
- There is no pain, redness or discharge.
- Vision is stable.
- Your ophthalmologist has confirmed that it is safe.
Some patients should wait longer, especially before:
- Hot-tub use
- Open-water swimming
- Diving
- Competitive swimming
- Water polo
- Contact water sports
- Swimming after complicated or combined eye surgery
When you return:
- Begin in a clean, well-maintained pool.
- Use comfortable, properly fitted goggles.
- Do not swim in contact lenses.
- Start with a short, gentle session.
- Avoid diving and high-impact activity initially.
- Do not rub the eye.
- Stop if you develop pain or a change in vision.
The safest approach is to complete the full four-week restriction and follow your ophthalmologist’s individual instructions.
